Round Mirror Size Guide: Over a Vanity, Dresser, Console or Sofa
Short answer: a round mirror looks right at about two-thirds to three-quarters of the width of the furniture below it. Over a 36-inch vanity that is a 24–30-inch round; over a 60-inch dresser, about 40 inches.
The two-thirds rule
A circle reads smaller than a rectangle of the same width because there is less glass at the corners. That is why round mirrors usually go a bit larger, relative to what they hang over, than rectangles do. Two-thirds of the furniture’s width is a safe starting point; three-quarters if you want the mirror to be the focal point.
Go much smaller than half the width and the mirror looks like it is missing a partner. Go wider than the furniture and it looks like it is about to roll off.

How high to hang a round mirror
- Over a vanity: bottom 5–10 inches above the faucet, center near eye level.
- Over a dresser or console: 6–10 inches above the top, so you can still stand a lamp or a vase without the mirror sitting on it.
- Over a sofa: 8–10 inches above the back cushions, so heads don’t brush it.
- On an open wall: center at about 57–60 inches from the floor, the same height galleries use for art.
Frame width matters too
A wide carved frame adds visual size. A 32-inch round with a deep, patterned frame holds a wall like a much bigger thin-framed mirror would, so if you are between two sizes and the frame is substantial, the smaller one is usually enough.
Wood finish and the room
A natural or light stain keeps a round mirror quiet; a deep green or blue finish turns it into the color accent of the room. Against white tile or a pale wall, a darker frame gives the circle a clear edge. Against wood paneling or a wood vanity, a contrasting finish keeps it from disappearing.
