Mirror Over the Fireplace: Mantel Placement Guide

Mirror Over the Fireplace: Mantel Placement Guide

A mirror over the fireplace is one of the oldest living room moves in the book. Done well, it bounces the fire’s light back into the room and turns the fireplace wall into the room’s actual focal point.

How wide should it be?

Keep the mirror a few inches narrower than the mantel shelf on each side. Too wide and it overwhelms the fireplace surround; too narrow and it looks like an afterthought. Our large mirrors run up to 36×78 in — enough width for most standard and oversized mantels.

How high above the mantel?

Leave 4–7 inches of clearance between the top of the mantel shelf and the bottom of the frame, so there’s breathing room for candles or décor without the mirror looking stacked on top of them.

Does a mirror over the fireplace break any rules?

Short answer: no official rule, but a few practical ones. Heat rises, so avoid hanging a mirror directly in the path of smoke or heavy heat exposure from a working fireplace — check your mirror and mantel manufacturer guidance for minimum clearance. Some feng shui traditions advise against a mirror that reflects the fire directly back at a seating area; if that matters to you, offset the mirror slightly rather than centering it dead-on.

Frame style for a mantel mirror

A fireplace wall is usually the room’s visual anchor, so this is where a bolder carved pattern earns its place. Aztec or Liberty read as substantial against stone or brick. Prefer something quieter? Mas or Tria still add texture without competing with the mantel décor.

Round mirror instead of rectangular?

Rectangles aren’t the only option.

A round mirror softens a stone or brick surround and works especially well over a wide, low mantel where a tall rectangle would look out of proportion.
