What Size Mirror Over a Vanity? Chart for 24 to 60-Inch Vanities

What Size Mirror Over a Vanity? Chart for 24 to 60-Inch Vanities

Short answer: choose a mirror a few inches narrower than the vanity, about 2–4 inches on each side for a rectangle, and hang it 5–10 inches above the faucet with the center of the glass near eye level. Over a 30-inch vanity that means roughly a 24-inch mirror; over a 36-inch vanity, 28–32 inches.

These are ranges, not laws. If your wall has a window, a medicine cabinet or sconces, those set the limits first.

Why narrower than the vanity

A mirror that runs past the edge of the cabinet looks like it is floating off the wall. Keeping it inside the vanity’s outline ties the two together visually, and it leaves room on either side for sconces, which light your face better than one fixture overhead.

The one exception: a mirror that runs the full width of a built-in vanity, edge to edge, on purpose. That is a different look (often frameless glass), and it works when there are no sconces on that wall.

One mirror or two over a double vanity?

With two sinks, two mirrors almost always look better. Center each one on its faucet, keep the gap between them at least 6–8 inches, and size each mirror to its half of the vanity. One long mirror over a double vanity is fine too, but it needs to be big enough to look intentional, and a wood frame that long gets heavy.

How high to hang a bathroom mirror

  • Bottom edge: 5–10 inches above the faucet or backsplash, so the faucet never blocks the glass and splashes don’t reach the frame.
  • Center: close to eye level for whoever uses the sink most, usually 60–65 inches from the floor.
  • Top edge: stop below the light fixture and leave some wall above the frame; it should not touch the ceiling.

If the household’s heights differ a lot, favor the shorter person. A taller person can always lean in; a shorter one cannot grow.

Rectangular or round?

A rectangle gives you more usable reflection for the same width, which helps for shaving, make-up and checking an outfit from the shoulders up. A round mirror softens a bathroom full of straight lines: tile grids, cabinet doors, the vanity itself. It also forgives a slightly off-center sink, since a circle has no corners to measure from.

Our bathroom range covers both: rectangular vanity mirrors at 24×32 and 28×32 inches, and round bathroom mirrors at 32 inches across, all in solid wood.

Is a wood mirror OK in a bathroom?

Yes, in a bathroom with ventilation. Run the exhaust fan during showers and for a while after, keep the frame out of direct shower spray, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth rather than glass cleaner. A wood frame is also the quickest way to warm up a room that is otherwise tile, porcelain and chrome.
